GWC names 2019 Presidential Scholarship recipients

Yatzary Huerta of Delavan, Wisconsin, and Mason Kauppila of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, were recently named George Williams College of Aurora University’s 2019 Presidential Scholarship recipients. The four-year, full-tuition scholarship was established for first-time freshmen who live in Walworth County.

Both of this year’s recipients are planning to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at GWC and are hopeful that the scholarship will help alleviate some of the stress associated with paying for their education.

“Having received this scholarship gives me the opportunity to immerse myself into the full college experience without the financial burden of college expenses,” said Kauppila. “This also allows me to pursue a post-graduation goal of attending medical school to become a doctor.”

Similarly, receiving the scholarship will also allow Huerta to more easily pursue her goals. “This scholarship makes my dream of becoming a nurse seem more like a reality. I couldn’t be any more grateful,” she added. “GWC checks off every box on my list when it came to what I was looking for in a school. The second I stepped foot on campus I knew it was where I belonged.”

Huerta and Kauppila were chosen for the competitive scholarship based on the strength of their academic accomplishments, detailed applications, and essays.

“We believe offering full-tuition scholarships to local students is a benefit to our community as well as the college,” said Kate Herrick, vice president for academics and student life. “These scholarships offer students such as Mason and Yatzary the opportunity to learn in their hometown community, allowing them to continue to be engaged locally while participating in campus events. Our hope is that the students will stay in the community upon graduation and continue to serve the local population.”
